Roberta's Story
While in high school, I talked with my counselor and teachers about what direction I should go in after graduating. They told me I would get married and have lots of kids. After graduation, I followed their recommendation. I got engaged to a great guy. However, I decided I wasn't ready to get married and broke off the engagement. I went to Tri-C. At that time, Tri-C was in the old Crile Hospital. What an experience! I enrolled in shorthand and typing classes.I thought I could be a secretary. I got kicked out because I was giggling too much. Seriously, I got kicked out! When I went home, my mom asked me what else I was going to do. I told her I was going to go to college. She reminded me that I had just gotten kicked out of college. The goal was to address issues before they because significant mental health issues. It was a great experience. My goal was to give back to my country and the military. When I was in undergraduate school, I tried to join the service to fly jets. During that time, it was out of the question for a female to fly jets. They offered me a desk job and I declined. Being in Minot was as close as I would get to flying jets. Again, it was a great experience. I returned home in December 2018. Since then, I have again been enjoying retirement.
